Some dental procedures can be painful, and anesthesia can help to make the experience more comfortable. In addition, some dental procedures require that the patient be completely still, which can be difficult or impossible to do without anesthesia. For example, during a wisdom tooth extraction, it is important that the patient not move their mouth or tongue as this could cause the tooth to break and make the procedure more difficult. Anesthesia can help the patient to stay still and relaxed during the procedure.

Caring for Your Mouth After Anesthesia

After your dental procedure, it is important to take care of your mouth. This includes brushing your teeth gently, rinsing your mouth with salt water, and avoiding hot or cold drinks. It is also important to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours after the procedure.  When anesthesia is used, it's also important not to drive or operate heavy machinery until the effects have completely worn off, which is usually within 24 hours. The use of ice packs to reduce swelling and as much rest as possible are also important!
